I had the good fortune of getting off of work this past Friday and finding the UPS truck making his rounds in my neighborhood and stopping at my place with my new Taylormade R9 irons. Since the weather here in Kansas was perfect this past weekend, (is that good timing or what?) I had a chance to take them for a spin and thought I'd give you guys an initial review after gaming them for 36 holes. I'll continue to add more as I get more rounds with them.

Specs: I did a custom order on these with x100's as I've been playing that shaft in one form or another for as long as I can remember. The loft, lie, and length were all standard and Taylormade had them out to me in just a couple weeks.

Appearance: I really like the satin look to the soles and clubface on these and the black badging in the cavity looks sharp. To me, they're basically an oversize version of the R9 TP irons, in that the heads are larger, the soles and topline wider, and the offset a little more. I think they're a great looking iron that for me inspired confidence at address.

Feel: In a word, great! They're very solid on center strikes and provide the usual feedback I'd expect on a few that I hit out on the toe side. In my opinion they felt better than my old R7's.

Performance: I was pleasantly surprised with how well these performed, I'm not sure if it was me or the clubs but they just wanted to go straight. I'm used to playing a small draw, but these just wanted to go straight all weekend. Not a bad problem to have. I was able to knock them down on a few shots with no problem and they performed great out of the tall grass. About the only flaw (if you want to call it that) is that if you really needed to curve one around a tree or something, these would be hard to really make it snap or cut.

Final Thoughts: The first time out and with only about 25 range balls to break them in, they helped me card a 69 on our par 71 course. I'd like to give the irons all the credit, but I was making more than my fair share of putts on Saturday. Sunday, I dropped back to a 73 and missed the putts I was making the day before. Overall, I'm very pleased with the R9's and look forward to getting some more rounds on them with more to report. I think Taylormade has a winner with these irons and I could see them benefiting a wide variety of players of different skill levels.

Also I have been hitting the New Pena Golf Balls:
